Running is Mental

Hello my small group of readers! I had my long run of the week today. 7 miles on shoes that badly need replacing. I don't recommend this at all. But, while I tried to get new shoes a couple times this week from Fleet Feet Savannah, they were out of my trusty Mizuno Wave Inspire. Not to worry, they ordered some for me and I should get them early this week. I love the Fleet Feet here. Savannah is the "city with a small town feel" as BC says constantly, and I feel that a lot in the Fleet Feet. I'm not your typical long distance runner: my body is not long and lean, I have a need for a sports bra, and I am really excited when I can break 11min/mile on my 3 mile runs. So in a store that specializes in running and employs serious runners, I could sorely be out of place. Thankfully this isn't the case and I've always been treated like a serious runner there, even if it's about what a good 2 mile route is. The staff even has invited me on their Saturday long runs, promising me that there is always someone to run with. I haven't tried that out yet and might wait a couple more weeks before that happens. It's more my insecurity than anything else.
Anyways, back to my 7 miles (and the title of this post). I read somewhere and can't remember where or who it was said by, that in a marathon the first 5 miles are the physical test. After that, the rest is completely mental. I'm not sure if that was said by a severely dehydrated, delusional person right after a marathon or what, but I'm pretty sure after 5 miles today, my legs were feeling pretty ridiculously tired. I know it's the middle of summer in the South and my desert blood can't handle humidity worth anything, but I can't imagine running the next 21.2 miles purely on my mental capacities. I mean, why train then? Not to mention, how sane am I that I'm running a marathon? So, yes random quote man (it had to be said by a man), running a marathon is mental. As in, completely insane. But here I am, willingly training for it!
On a side note, I was given a Nathan Intensity Hydration Vest as a gift for my long runs. This morning was my first time using it and I love, love, LOVED it. Unlike what I thought it would be like, sloshy and moving around all over my back, it didn't move at all and if it was sloshy I didn't hear it over my music. I didn't need a lot of water, just at the half way point and about a mile from the end, but it was nice to have it there just in case. It also has tons of pockets and compartments for my longer runs that will require Gu or whatever I end up using for carbs and calories to keep me going.

In the wedding world, we got our contract for the Olde Pink House! And we're pretty sure where we want our rehearsal dinner. Our fave restaurant in Savannah is Corleone's. We went there last night and sat at the bar getting to know the bartender who is just great! He introduced me to the Cucumber-Ginger Martini. Summer in a martini glass.
We've also started looking at honeymoon destinations. That's going well. We have about 10 different trips we'd like to go on, so we're at no loss for ideas. It's the choosing part that gets you. Who knows where we'll end up going, but we'll be MARRIED and together and that's all that matters. 16 months from today!
Oh and BC has expressed his displeasure with his blog nickname. From now on, he will be referred to as Sir Fianco (fee-an-so). Fiance was too gender neutral for us, so we're fiancette and fianco. The "Sir" part is his own addition. I just say "Yes, dear" and move on. We're weird, that's what is so lovable about us. Well, that's about all I have.
Keep on running,
Runaway Bride

  1. I don't like that quote...the quote I DO like is "Know when you are ready to run another marathon?....When you have completely forgotten about the last one!"
